PAST
Hemp rope was discovered dating back to 26,000 BC. Ancient China grew hemp and used its fibers for cloth. Vikings used hemp cordage in their ships, and Christopher Columbus used 80 tons of hemp to bring his ships to America.
From 1690 - 1800s you could actually pay your taxes with hemp!
By 1880, 80% of all books and textiles we made of hemp.
PRESENT
In addition to defining hemp as cannabis that contains no more than 0.3% THC by dry weight, the bill asserts a ‘whole plant’ definition of hemp, including plant extracts; and removes roadblocks to the rapidly growing hemp industry in the U.S., notably by authorizing and encouraging access to federal research funding for hemp, and removing restrictions on banking, water rights, and other regulatory roadblocks the hemp industry currently faces. The bill also explicitly authorizes crop insurance for hemp.
FUTURE
Hemp is one of the most powerful weapons we have to fight climate threats. Hemp grows in 6 months.
Hemp will replace synthetic plastic. Hemp will replace a range of pharmaceuticals. Hemp will become a mainstream fabric. And protein. Hemp will curb pesticides. Hemp will help us cut down less trees. Hemp will create green jobs. Hemp will give every farmer a cash crop.
